Masters / MHA in Health Science
Master of health science (MHS) and master of health administration (MHA) in health science degrees both are alternatives to masters in public health (MPH) degrees. Your specific educational path with a master’s degree in this field depends on your program of student, but in general, this type of program is for students who want to specialize more than a MPH degree allows.
With a master’s degree in health science, you can go one of two routes. With an academic concentration, you’ll be preparing for a career heavily involved with health research. Alternatively, with a professional concentration, you’ll be preparing to work in public health organizations. With this degree, you can specialize in order to prepare for career in certain fields, such as healthcare risk management, nursing, clinical study procedures, immunology, international health, policy, mental health, leadership, and more. Many schools have specific tracks covering these or other health science topics to allow students to completely focus on preparing for one type of career. There are also health science programs that are slightly more general, in case you aren’t yet sure in which specific field you want to work.
When choosing a school to attend for your health science master’s degree, the most important step is to first determine your career goals in the future. Then, you can research which schools will best prepare you to work in this field. Health science is a vast field, and one that is growing every day, so not every program may cover the topics that will be most important to you in the workforce. With a master’s degree, however, you’ll qualify for better jobs with more responsibilities and higher pay rates no matter where you work within the health science field.
